Property and Evidence

The Property and Evidence Unit is responsible for the inventory, storage, return and/or disposal of all property seized or recovered by KCPD.

Hours of operation to pick up property are Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. Property returns are by appointment only.  

How to Claim Property
Anyone who believes that their property has been seized or is being held by the police department should contact the Property and Evidence Unit by phone or email as soon as possible. Unclaimed property is subject to forfeit and/or disposal after 40 days.

Property owners are advised to make an appointment with the Property and Evidence Unit BEFORE arriving to pick up property items, in order to ensure that items are available. For the most expedited response, you can contact the unit via email at property&[email protected], and include your name, phone number, case report number, and property description, and you will be contacted within 48 hours to schedule an appointment to pick up your property.

Owners will need to schedule an appointment to retrieve their weapons. Please be prepared to show valid photo identification, and acceptable proof of ownership of the firearm. If a weapon was seized due to drug possession, the owner will need to contact the Drug Enforcement Unit to obtain a property release. Additionally, if a resident has a weapon that was seized for any other criminal activity, a release is needed from the detective handling the case.

Weapons cannot be returned if any of the following apply:

  1. You are a convicted felon
  2. You have outstanding arrest warrants
  3. You have a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction
  4. You are the subject of an Order of Protection

Other facts or circumstances may disqualify you from having a weapon returned to you.  If you have any questions, please contact the Gun Room at the above number.
