Police Officer Responsibilities:

Patrol Assigned Areas
- Conduct regular patrols in designated areas to ensure safety and prevent crime.
- Respond to emergency calls and distress signals in a timely and professional manner.

Enforce Laws and Regulations
- Uphold and enforce local, state, and federal laws, ensuring public safety and order.
- Issue citations and make arrests for violations of laws and ordinances.

Investigate Crimes and Incidents
- Conduct initial investigations at crime scenes, gathering evidence, and documenting incidents.
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects, and prepare detailed reports for follow-up and prosecution.

Maintain Public Safety
- Monitor public areas to prevent criminal activity and disturbances.
- Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies for large-scale investigations or emergencies.

Respond to Emergencies
- Provide emergency response to accidents, medical incidents, natural disasters, and civil disturbances.
- Administer basic first aid or coordinate emergency medical services as needed.

Prepare and Maintain Documentation
- Complete incident reports, arrest records, and other documentation in an accurate and timely manner.
- Maintain logs and files for ongoing investigations, evidence handling, and case status updates.

Testify in Court
- Present evidence and testify in criminal and civil court proceedings as needed.
- Assist in the prosecution of criminal cases, providing reliable and accurate testimony.

Engage in Community Policing
- Develop positive relationships with community members to build trust and gather intelligence.
- Attend community meetings and collaborate with local organizations to address public safety concerns.

Ensure the Safety of Officers and the Public
- Take appropriate action in high-risk situations to ensure the safety of fellow officers and the public.
- Use de-escalation techniques to handle potentially volatile or dangerous situations.

Assist in Traffic Enforcement
- Monitor traffic conditions, enforce traffic laws, and address reckless or impaired driving.
- Investigate accidents, prepare accident reports, and provide assistance to injured parties.

Handle Evidence and Property
- Secure, catalog, and preserve physical evidence following established protocols.
- Ensure proper chain of custody for evidence submitted to court or for further investigation.

Participate in Training and Professional Development
- Attend regular training sessions to stay current with law enforcement procedures, technologies, and legal updates.
- Maintain physical fitness and firearm proficiency to perform duties effectively and safely.

Provide Support and Assistance to Other Agencies
- Collaborate with other local, state, and federal agencies in multi-jurisdictional investigations.
- Provide support in search-and-rescue operations, crowd control, or special assignments as needed.

Handle Non-Emergency Calls
- Assist with non-emergency calls for service, such as wellness checks, noise complaints, or lost property.
- Offer resources or referrals to social services for individuals in need of assistance.

Uphold Ethical Standards and Professionalism
- Maintain high ethical standards in all aspects of work, demonstrating integrity, respect, and professionalism.
- Adhere to department policies and procedures, including those regarding the use of force and the handling of sensitive materials.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum age: 21 upon graduation from the Regional Police Academy
- U.S. Citizen
- No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors
- Must reside within 30 statute miles of Kansas City, Missouri city limits during employment
- Valid Missouri driver’s license and ability to operate department vehicles safely
- Completion of Regional Police Academy graduation requirements
- Missouri POST licensure required and maintained throughout employment
- Firearm operation as per department certification
- Successful completion of medical, physical fitness, psychological evaluations, and polygraph test

Skills & Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Kansas City geography, critical areas, and locations requiring police attention
- Familiarity with Missouri state laws, municipal ordinances, and department policies
- Ability to learn and operate computer hardware/software, mobile data devices, and 2-way radios
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to understand and respect diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Capacity to handle disturbances, crime scenes, and emergencies effectively
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations
- Integrity, honesty, and ethical behavior in all duties
- Basic first aid and CPR proficiency
Physical, Cognitive, and Psychological Requirements:
- Must meet department-established physical, cognitive, and psychological health standards
- Specialized assignments (e.g., Bomb, Canine, Tactical, Undercover) may require additional physical/psychological criteria.
