Wellness Unit
Wellness Unit
At KCPD, officers and professional staff members have access to a Wellness Unit. The Unit consists of three wellness specialists and a supervisor who are dedicated only to the well-being of the department’s employees. That makes KCPD the only law enforcement agency in the region to offer full-time specialists.
Established in 2017, the Wellness Unit is a valuable resource founded on research and guidance from a psychologist. Over the years, KCPD’s wellness specialists have visited law enforcement agencies around the country to learn what has worked. The Unit is not a startup idea, but a refined service employees can access at any time. Our specialists have more than 100 years of combined local and federal law enforcement experience, including with the Secret Service.
KCPD’S five pillars of Wellness are:
-
-
Physical Health
-
Mental Health
-
Financial Health
-
Social Health
-
Spiritual Health
-
Our Wellness specialists, for example, will reach out to officers who were part of a critical incident to ensure their needs are met. They also have access to the best mental health clinicians in the Kansas City region.
On average, our specialists contact more than 150 employees per month, to check in. Other examples they help with include career development, financial planning, and retirement assistance among others.
Crime scene technicians, call takers and dispatchers, along with all other professional staffers, equally receive access to all resources. Though KCPD’s Wellness Unit has served employees for many years, it continues to add new resources.
