As graduation nears, recruits in the police academy ran the morning of August 1, in honor of a fallen KCPD officer – a tradition that recognizes the ultimate sacrifice.
This run honored Officer Floyd Montgomery, killed responding to a disturbance on January 28, 1948. Prior to this, Montgomery left KCPD in 1944 to serve in the Army in World War II before later rejoining the department. Montgomery was married and had a son.
Chief Graves and Mayor Lucas addressed the recruits beforehand. The 184th Entrant Officer Class, the largest to graduate since 2019, will graduate in mid-August.
