The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver of the ATV (pictured above).

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, officers were patrolling downtown near 16th and Main when they saw a group of illegal off-road motorized bikes and ATVs doing stunts and driving erratically. Officers then observed this type of activity at Main St. and Truman Rd.

An officer attempted to throw stop sticks at an ATV and take the driver into custody when the driver backed up, brought the ATV into a wheelie and struck the officer. The ATV landed on the officer before the suspect proceeded to drive over him, fleeing the scene.

Other officers lost sight of the ATV and driver when the suspect drove northbound in the southbound lanes of I-35, going the wrong way. This driver is still at large. The suspect is believed to have driven a black and lime green Yamaha Raptor 700.

KCPD is asking anyone with information about this suspect to speak up. Tipsters can remain anonymous at www.kccrimestoppers.com or by calling 816-474-TIPS. They can also call KCPD’s Assault Squad at 816-234-5227.

The officer has been released from the hospital, is recovering, and will soon return to work.

During a news conference on April 14, Chief Stacey Graves and Mayor Quinton Lucas spoke about the incident, KCPD’s continued efforts against these illegal activities, and penalties for those that break the law. It should be noted that KCPD has aggressively targeted these activities, using tactical response teams, helicopters, and teams of officers.

"It's a miracle our officer who was injured Saturday night trying to stop criminal recklessness on our streets is out of the hospital and recovering at home," said Graves. "While our officer recovers from his serious injuries, I ask our city to step up and assist in identifying and locating the person responsible for the disgusting assault on your Kansas City police officer. In turn, I ask the person responsible for the assault on our police officer to make arrangements for a peaceful surrender, sooner than later. Thank you to the many pedestrians who witnessed the assault on our officer who ran to his aid. We would like to talk to you. Thank you to all of those who have contacted me with prayers and offers of support."

Recently, city ordinances have changed to increase fines and jail time. City Hall has also increased tow fees. KCPD is in discussions with City officials to add additional cameras, automatic license plate readers, fencing and gates in areas in and around downtown to further curb street racing, sideshows, and dangerous motorized vehicles exhibiting lawless behavior.
