Gravitating to criminal justice, but not quite knowing what in criminal justice, Elizabeth Catts heard about call-taking at KCPD and decided to give it a shot.
“I figured before I do anything, I might as well get my foot in the door and see what it’s all about before I commit to going into the academy,” Catts explained.
For almost a year, the 20-year-old Lee’s Summit native has answered the call – thousands of them. She is responsible for handling emergencies.
“I love what I do,” Catts said. “I like the citizens talking to me and telling me what their issues are and seeing how I can help them.”
Since she was in middle school, Catts has thought about serving others. She thought about joining the Army before deciding to become a police officer. Her experience as a call taker has solidified her desire to help others in a law enforcement role, simultaneously rewarding her with accomplishment.
“Ever since I was young, I wanted to do something to better the community because someone has to do it,” Catts said. “I like talking to people and handling situations! The want to help people is what got me into this job.”
Catts has applied to be an officer at KCPD and plans to enter the academy later in 2025.
