Deaf, Married KCPD Employees Report Success
Sometimes, a couple’s love story begins at work. But in the case of Becky and Jason Tercey, their existing bond led them to becoming coworkers. The Terceys hold the exact same job, in the same division, at KCPD.
Only their shifts are different.
“We read police reports and make sure everything is correct,” said Becky. “The reports will go to the National Information Center, the state, our supervisor. If something is missed, we’re on it.”
Becky began at KCPD five years ago. Jason has been with the department for almost 25 years. The couple is also deaf and proud to work at KCPD because they say it is “deaf-friendly” and attune to the Deaf culture.
Jason started in building operations in the late 90s, eventually finding his way to working with the Records Management System (RMS). When Becky moved to Kansas City from Oregon, a friend introduced them. They’ve been together since, married in 2012, and are the proud parents of two girls.
Becky became Jason’s coworker five years ago, emboldened by her criminal justice background and KCPD’s culture of support. In the department, the Terceys have the tools and backing needed to succeed.
“We use a video phone,” Jason explained. “The whole department, different captains, they make it accessible here.”
That includes using a sign language interpreter who attends staff meetings with the Terceys so that the couple and RMS team can fully communicate.
“Anytime they have a meeting, I will be hired for the meetings,” said Michelle DeMartino, interpreter. “I will adjust my schedule to support KCPD.”
