“Help I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!”
Someone at Life Alert’s headquarters in California had to send the help. That someone was Sydney Greenberg, a college student, who saw the company’s ad for a dispatcher, tried it, and loved it.
The Los Angeles native enjoyed it so much, she became a dispatcher for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). “I wasn’t aware of all the crime that was going on,” Greenberg said. “It made me much more aware of what’s happening in the city. You may hear some things on the news, but you really don’t know.”
Born and raised in LA, Greenberg wasn’t familiar with Kansas City until she met her future husband, a KC native, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. And just like that, Greenberg moved to the Midwest, ready to continue dispatching.
She’s been at KCPD for five years, and the purpose of her job matters. “People are relying on us for everything in that moment,” Greenberg said. “I know I’m not the one responding, but I got someone to you.”
KCPD is currently hiring call takers and dispatchers. The position carries meaning and challenge.
“I feel I thrive in stress and chaos,” Greenberg said.” “I know it’s overwhelming for some people but that’s why it takes a certain type of person to do the job. I don’t mean that in a negative way. I mean that if you can multi-task, and type, and talk at the same time, you can be so useful in a place like this. You can have a really great career here.”
