The KCPD Helicopter Unit had a busy and productive night recently, courtesy of Officer Darin Lutz and Sergeant Jon Hess who worked together as pilot and observer. The officers:

• Spotted a suspect walking around an apartment complex armed with a rifle. They saw him place the rifle under a vehicle and try to hide from officers on the ground. Lutz and Hess directed the officers to the suspect and the weapon.

• Helped detectives arrest three violent felons with warrants; one had an illegal firearm and a large amount of narcotics.

• Helped a law enforcement agency track a vehicle that was stop-sticked. Officers on the ground arrested four people and recovered a stolen vehicle. When two suspects tossed guns, Lutz and Hess located them using their infrared cameras.

• Helped a neighboring law enforcement agency locate a suspect hiding in the woods, directing officers to make the arrest.

• Tracked a vehicle that ran from officers, directing officers to a residence. The vehicle was stolen.
