Veterans Thrive At KCPD

Deployed to the Middle East, Hollie Brannen was exactly where she wanted to be – serving her country and her state in the Missouri Army National Guard.

It was the call to service, after all, that drew Brannen away from managing a bowling center to following her heart. That call also summoned her to KCPD where Brannen, nearly 13 years later, is a sergeant at East Patrol Division.

Within both organizations, Brannen has found careers that excite and challenge her. In the military, Brannen, now a staff intelligence officer for a MP brigade, oversaw 160 personnel in deployment. At KCPD, she is directly involved with helping and counseling officers.

“I love it,” Brannen said. “First line leadership is one of the greatest positions you can have anywhere because you have the ability to work with the first line responders and you have the opportunity to affect change because you understand the mentality.”

Leaders learn before leading. For Brannen, that came early, watching her mother serve as a police officer in Excelsior Springs, Mo., then at a detention center in Clay County, Mo. Over time, the knowledge she’s gained from KCPD and the National Guard has been extremely beneficial.

“I’ve been able to go into companies and battalions and do training with them because of training I’ve had here (KCPD) and vice versa,” Brannen explained.

The parallel careers have brought similar opportunities. Within Brannen’s two organizations, she has had the opportunity to grow and ascend. That’s a key reason, with its multitude of specialized units, that she recommends KCPD to veterans.

“People who have exceled in the military with that line of structure will succeed here because they’ve already done it,” Brannen said. “This is just a different place and space for them to do it. You have a vast amount of investigate elements you can go to because you’re not bottle-necked here. You have opportunity for upward mobility.”
