New Language App Leads to Better Understanding between KCPD and the Community
The KCPD began using the Propio ONE language translation application in April of this year. The app provides 24/7 access to translation services by connecting users to interpreters using audio and/or video. The audio/video option includes American Sign Language which Sgt. Chris Raymer needed recently at the North Patrol Division.
Sgt. Raymer said that installing the app was very easy and once he entered his access code, it took less than a minute to get ahold of an interpreter via video for American Sign Language. “Overall, I was very impressed and it was far easier than attempting to contact someone to respond to the station. It would have taken over an hour for someone to get to the station to assist us in person and instead, we were able to immediately get someone to help us over my phone”. Sgt. Raymer was able to complete the report for the citizen in about fifteen minutes by using Propio ONE.
The addition of Propio ONE Language app is just one example of how KCPD is continuing to utilize resources in an effort to communicate and assist our community members whose first language might not be English. We have also added Google Translate to our website, KCPD.ORG, enabling the entire site to be translated with one simple click of the preferred language from a drop-down list in the bottom right hand corner of every page. We also insure our website is accessible to everyone by adding alternate text to any images that convey crucial information. This makes our site usable as a resource for people with visual impairments or those using screen readers, without missing valuable content.
