A Kansas City Missouri Police officer wrestled a gun away from a man after the suspect pulled it out during a foot-chase Thursday.

Officers conducted a traffic stop a little before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at 33rd and Woodland. One of the car’s occupants started running away. A KCPD officer ran after him, behind a church and into the backyard of a home in the 3200 block of Highland Avenue. In the backyard, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband.

The officer tackled the man, and a struggle ensued for control of the gun. Witnesses said they could tell the officer was trying to get something away from the suspect. The officer was eventually able to get the gun. It was loaded with a live round in the chamber and an additional eight bullets in an attached magazine. The suspect took off again after the officer disarmed him. The man had lost his shirt in the struggle.

Even as the rain came down, a canine officer found the suspect hiding behind an abandoned car in the 3200 block of Wayne Avenue. He is a convicted felon and is facing charges of felon in possession of a firearm, assault, armed criminal action and resisting arrest. The officer was examined and released by paramedics at the scene.
