For saving the lives of children, teens, and strangers, seven KCPD officers received life-saving awards at a ceremony held at the Regional Police Academy on March 25.
In addition, the 2023 Homicide Unit received recognition for its work and commitment to justice, achieving a 73% clearance rate that was roughly 20 points higher than the national average. Since 2023, KCPD's clearance rate has only increased.
Other officers and employees received Meritorious Service Awards for their long-term dedication and commitment to their duties.
One of the night’s highlights was the Certificate of Appreciation that the police department awarded to citizen Tony Carey. In October of 2024, Carey came to the rescue of a Traffic Officer who was on his motorcycle and critically injured in a crash. Carey checked on the officer, eventually pushing an emergency button on the officer’s radio that alerted dispatch.
Dispatch alerted officers and emergency aid that helped save the officer’s life. That dispatcher, Carrie Stephenson, was awarded the Certificate of Commendation for her performance.
