Officers to be presented with Department’s highest honor at award ceremony tonight

A sergeant and an officer will receive the Medal of Valor – the Kansas City Missouri Police Department’s highest honor – at an award ceremony tonight for their actions in stopping a man who was on a murderous crime spree that killed Kansas City, Kansas, Police Detective Brad Lancaster.

The award ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. today in the auditorium of the Kansas City Regional Police Academy, 6885 N.E. Pleasant Valley Rd.

Officers also will receive awards for saving the lives of victims who had lost large amounts of blood, for extracting children from a house with an armed and barricaded man and for containing an active shooter.

Two groups of officers will be awarded for their actions in separate incidents in which they wrestled in flames and smoke with different women who tried to harm themselves and others. Two sergeants will receive Distinguished Service Medals for pursuing and arresting a man who ambushed them as they drove in a patrol car earlier this year.

Several department members will receive Meritorious Service Awards for actions such as exceptional service to Kansas City’s youth, a huge number of DUI arrests and more.

A resident also will receive the Certificate of Appreciation for helping KCPD officers apprehend a robbery suspect.
