Police Athletic League brightens holidays for 300 families Thursday

More than 300 urban-core families will be treated to gifts, food and a fun time at the annual Police Athletic League (PAL) Holiday Party on Thursday evening.

The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at the PAL Center, 1801 White Ave. It will include activities from dinner to cookie decorating to face painting to police displays, as well as a visit from Santa Claus. And thanks to generous community donors, Santa will be loaded down with presents.

All PAL youth in attendance will receive gifts, toiletries, PAL sweatshirts and stocking caps. They also get to pick out a gift for their parents. Cerner’s First Hand Foundation and Entertainment Properties donated a combined total of about $30,000 to make all the gifts possible.

The Police Athletic League officers and Board Members said they are incredibly appreciative of this support and how much it will mean for PAL kids and their families. PAL serves more than 300 youth ages 8 to 18 years old, and the majority of them live in poverty.

The mission of the Police Athletic League of Kansas City is to offer youth the opportunity to interact with police officers in a positive setting while participating in cultural, mentoring and sports programs, with the main emphasis being placed on academics.
