The press conference was called to order at 10:33 a.m. by Commissioner Shurin, who announced the dates and locations of three upcoming public forums to discuss the selection of the new Chief of Police. The upcoming public forums are as follows:

· Monday, May 8, 2017

Commissioner Shurin advised that these public forums are being held to allow the community a chance to become involved with the selection of the new Chief of Police. At these public forums, community members will be given a chance to provide input and comments to the Board concerning the upcoming hiring process of the Chief of Police.

Commissioner Shurin advised that the Board hired Ralph Andersen and Associates as the search firm to assist the Board in a nationwide search for the most qualified applicants for the new Chief of Police. The application process for the Chief of Police is now open and will close on May 31, 2017. Commissioner Shurin advised that the Board will meet with Ralph Andersen and Associates in June to review the applications submitted for the position. After the applications are reviewed, the Board will narrow the applicants down into a group of the most qualified candidates. The Board will then hold a community meeting with the reduced group of candidates in attendance. Commissioner Shurin stated that the anticipated date of the selection of the new Chief of Police will be in late August or September 2017. Mayor James stated that the selection process could exceed that time frame because the Board is dedicated to finding the best candidate for this position, and will use as much time as needed to make the best decision.

There will be an Interim Chief selected for the time after Chief Darryl Forté’s retirement on May 20, 2017 until a new Chief of Police is selected and sworn in. Commissioner Shurin advised that the person sworn in as Interim Chief will not be a candidate for the Chief of Police selection.

The press conference adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
