For the second year, Hy-Vee and KCPD will distribute 500 free Christmas hams at the KCPD East Patrol Division on Dec. 19 for families in need, but this time the whole dinner will be provided, as well.

KCPD asked Harvesters Community Food Network if they’d be willing to provide side dishes for the Hormel Cure 81 hams this year, and the organization eagerly agreed. Giving the Basics also will provide free bags of personal hygiene items.

The free Christmas meal distribution will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday and will be first-come, first-served. (Department members and volunteers will deliver some of the meals to homebound seniors and disabled individuals beforehand.) The food items are not hot and are designed so families can make the holiday feasts at their own homes.

Hy-Vee, Harvesters, Giving the Basics and KCPD are happy to make the holidays a little brighter (and more delicious) this Christmas season.
