Growing Confidence Propels KCPD Officer

Like any good cop, Darius Dickerson is perceptive. The officer of almost two years understands what’s behind his growth and improvement on the job.
“I have more confidence in my work because I’ve trusted my training, trusting everything I learned,” Dickerson explained. “How to find my voice, knowing when to use it and knowing when to listen to people.”
Dickerson also credits his support system – his sergeant and sector – which makes overnights as a Central Patrol officer a great place to be. The variety of the job keeps him motivated.
“The calls are different,” Dickerson said. “It’s a new story every single call. I know I can’t help everybody, but if I can help just one person, that works for me.”
Dickerson, 33, is a father who has always been passionate about helping kids. He wants to set a good example for family and community, even if his profession wasn’t one he dreamed about.
When he decided to become an officer, one of the attractions to KCPD was that the department accepted him as he was, with longer hair and tattoos.
“When I go on calls, I see people who ask, ‘They let you have that hair and those tattoos?’ Everyone has a perception of what a cop should look like, but I think it’s cool to get compliments from everybody.”
